The Fifteenth Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 75 Confitebimur tibi.

UNTO thee, O God, do we give thanks; * yea, unto thee do we give thanks.

2Thy Name also is so nigh; * and that do thy wondrous works declare.

3In the appointed time, saith God, * I shall judge according unto right.

4The earth is weak, and all the inhabiters thereof: * I bear up the pillars of it.

5I said unto the fools, Deal not so madly; * and to the ungodly, Set not up your horn.

6Set not up your horn on high, * and speak not with a stiff neck.

7For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, * nor yet from the south.

8And why? God is the Judge; * he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

9For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; * it is full mixt, and he poureth out of the same.

10As for the dregs thereof, * all the ungodly of the earth shall drink them, and suck them out.

11But I will talk of the God of Jacob, * and praise him for ever.

12All the horns of the ungodly also will I break, * and the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

Psalm 76 Notus in Judaea.

IN Judah is God known; * his Name is great in Israel.

2At Salem is his tabernacle, * and his dwelling in Sion.

3There brake he the arrows of the bow, * the shield, the sword, and the battle.

4Thou art glorious in might, * when thou comest from the hills of the robbers.

5The proud are robbed, they have slept their sleep; * and all the men whose hands were mighty have found nothing.

6At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, * both the chariot and horse are fallen.

7Thou, even thou art to be feared; * and who may stand in thy sight when thou art angry?

8Thou didst cause thy judgment to be heard from heaven; * the earth trembled, and was still,

9When God arose to judgment, * and to help all the meek upon earth.

10The fierceness of man shall turn to thy praise; * and the fierceness of them shalt thou refrain.

11Promise unto the LORD your God, and keep it, all ye that are round about him; * bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

12He shall refrain the spirit of princes, * and is wonderful among the kings of the earth.

Psalm 77 Voce mea ad Dominum.

I will cry unto God with my voice; * even unto God will I cry with my voice, and he shall hearken unto me.

2In the time of my trouble I sought the Lord: * I stretched forth my hands unto him, and ceased not in the night season; my soul refused comfort.

3When I am in heaviness, I will think upon God; * when my heart is vexed, I will complain.

4Thou holdest mine eyes waking: * I am so feeble that I cannot speak.

5I have considered the days of old, * and the years that are past.

6I call to remembrance my song, * and in the night I commune with mine own heart, and search out my spirit.

7Will the Lord absent himself for ever? * and will he be no more intreated?

8Is his mercy clean gone for ever? * and is his promise come utterly to an end for evermore?

9Hath God forgotten to be gracious? * and will he shut up his loving-kindness in displeasure?

10And I said, It is mine own infirmity; * but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most Highest.

11I will remember the works of the LORD, * and call to mind thy wonders of old time.

12I will think also of all thy works, * and my talking shall be of thy doings.

13Thy way, O God, is holy: * who is so great a God as our God?

14Thou art the God that doest wonders, * and hast declared thy power among the peoples.

15Thou hast mightily delivered thy people, * even the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

16The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee, and were afraid; * the depths also were troubled.

17The clouds poured out water, the air thundered, * and thine arrows went abroad.

18The voice of thy thunder was heard round about: * the lightnings shone upon the ground; the earth was moved, and shook withal.

19Thy way is in the sea, and thy paths in the great waters, * and thy footsteps are not known.

20Thou leddest thy people like sheep, * by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Let us Pray.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE Lord + bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, this night and evermore. Amen.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 78 Attendite, popule.

HEAR my law, O my people; * incline your ears unto the words of my mouth.

2I will open my mouth in a parable; * I will declare hard sentences of old;

3Which we have heard and known, * and such as our fathers have told us;

4That we should not hide them from the children of the generations to come; * but to show the honour of the LORD, his mighty and wonderful works that he hath done.

5He made a covenant with Jacob, and gave Israel a law, * which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children;

6That their posterity might know it, * and the children which were yet unborn;

7To the intent that when they came up, * they might show their children the same;

8That they might put their trust in God; * and not to forget the works of God, but to keep his commandments;

9And not to be as their forefathers, a faithless and stubborn generation; * a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit clave not stedfastly unto God;

10Like as the children of Ephraim; * who being harnessed, and carrying bows, turned themselves back in the day of battle.

11They kept not the covenant of God, * and would not walk in his law;

12But forgat what he had done, * and the wonderful works that he had showed for them.

13Marvellous things did he in the sight of our forefathers, in the land of Egypt, * even in the field of Zoan.

14He divided the sea, and let them go through; * he made the waters to stand on an heap.

15In the day-time also he led them with a cloud, * and all the night through with a light of fire.

16He clave the hard rocks in the wilderness, * and gave them drink thereof, as it had been out of the great depth.

17He brought waters out of the stony rock, * so that it gushed out like the rivers.

18Yet for all this they sinned more against him, * and provoked the Most Highest in the wilderness.

19They tempted God in their hearts, * and required meat for their lust.

20They spake against God also, saying, * Shall God prepare a table in the wilderness?

21He smote the stony rock indeed, that the water gushed out, and the streams flowed withal; * but can he give bread also, or provide flesh for his people?

22When the LORD heard this, he was wroth; * so the fire was kindled in Jacob, and there came up heavy displeasure against Israel;

23Because they believed not in God, * and put not their trust in his help.

24So he commanded the clouds above, * and opened the doors of heaven.

25He rained down manna also upon them for to eat, * and gave them food from heaven.

26So man did eat angels' food; * for he sent them meat enough.

27He caused the east-wind to blow under heaven; * and through his power he brought in the southwest-wind.

28He rained flesh upon them as thick as dust, * and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.

29He let it fall among their tents, * even round about their habitation.

30So they did eat, and were well filled; for he gave them their own desire: * they were not disappointed of their lust.

31But while the meat was yet in their mouths, the heavy wrath of God came upon them, and slew the wealthiest of them; * yea, and smote down the chosen men that were in Israel.

32But for all this they sinned yet more, * and believed not his wondrous works.

33Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, * and their years in trouble.

34When he slew them, they sought him, * and turned them early, and inquired after God.

35And they remembered that God was their strength, * and that the High God was their redeemer.

36Nevertheless, they did but flatter him with their mouth, * and dissembled with him in their tongue.

37For their heart was not whole with him, * neither continued they stedfast in his covenant.

38But he was so merciful, that he forgave their misdeeds, * and destroyed them not.

39Yea, many a time turned he his wrath away, * and would not suffer his whole displeasure to arise.

40For he considered that they were but flesh, * and that they were even a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

41Many a time did they provoke him in the wilderness, * and grieved him in the desert.

42They turned back, and tempted God, * and provoked the Holy One in Israel.

43They thought not of his hand, * and of the day when he delivered them from the hand of the enemy;

44How he had wrought his miracles in Egypt, * and his wonders in the field of Zoan.

45He turned their waters into blood, * so that they might not drink of the rivers.

46He sent flies among them, and devoured them up; * and frogs to destroy them.

47He gave their fruit unto the caterpillar, * and their labour unto the grasshopper.

48He destroyed their vines with hailstones, * and their mulberry-trees with the frost.

49He smote their cattle also with hailstones, * and their flocks with hot thunderbolts.

50He cast upon them the furiousness of his wrath, anger, displeasure, and trouble: * and sent evil angels among them.

51He made a way to his indignation, and spared not their soul from death; * but gave their life over to the pestilence;

52And smote all the firstborn in Egypt, * the most principal and mightiest in the dwellings of Ham.

53But as for his own people, he led them forth like sheep, * and carried them in the wilderness like a flock.

54He brought them out safely, that they should not fear, * and overwhelmed their enemies with the sea.

55And brought them within the borders of his sanctuary, * even to his mountain which he purchased with his right hand.

56He cast out the heathen also before them, * caused their land to be divided among them for an heritage, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

57Yet they tempted and displeased the most high God, * and kept not his testimonies;

58But turned their backs, and fell away like their forefathers; * starting aside like a broken bow.

59For they grieved him with their hill-altars, * and provoked him to displeasure with their images.

60When God heard this, he was wroth, * and took sore displeasure at Israel;

61So that he forsook the tabernacle in Shiloh, * even the tent that he had pitched among men.

62He delivered their power into captivity, * and their beauty into the enemy's hand.

63He gave his people over also unto the sword, * and was wroth with his inheritance.

64The fire consumed their young men, * and their maidens were not given to marriage.

65Their priests were slain with the sword, * and there were no widows to make lamentation.

66So the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, * and like a giant refreshed with wine.

67He smote his enemies in the hinder parts, * and put them to a perpetual shame.

68He refused the tabernacle of Joseph, * and chose not the tribe of Ephraim;

69But chose the tribe of Judah, * even the hill of Sion which he loved.

70And there he built his temple on high, * and laid the foundation of it like the ground which he hath made continually.

71He chose David also his servant, * and took him away from the sheep-folds.

72As he was following the ewes great with young ones he took him, * that he might feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.

73So he fed them with a faithful and true heart, * and ruled them prudently with all his power.
