The Nineteenth Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 95 Venite, exultemus.

O come, let us sing unto the LORD; * let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.

2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; * and show ourselves glad in him with psalms.

3For the LORD is a great God; * and a great King above all gods.

4In his hand are all the corners of the earth; * and the strength of the hills is his also.

5The sea is his, and he made it; * and his hands prepared the dry land.

6O come, let us worship and fall down, * and kneel before the LORD our Maker.

7For he is the Lord our God; * and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

8To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts * as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness;

9When your fathers tempted me, * proved me, and saw my works.

10Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, * It is a people that do err in their hearts, for they have not known my ways:

11Unto whom I sware in my wrath, * that they should not enter into my rest.

Psalm 96 Cantate Domino.

O sing unto the LORD a new song; * sing unto the LORD, all the whole earth.

2Sing unto the LORD, and praise his Name; * be telling of his salvation from day to day.

3Declare his honour unto the heathen, * and his wonders unto all peoples.

4For the LORD is great, and cannot worthily be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods.

5As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols; * but it is the LORD that made the heavens.

6Glory and worship are before him; * power and honour are in his sanctuary.

7Ascribe unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the peoples, * ascribe unto the LORD worship and power.

8Ascribe unto the LORD the honour due unto his Name; * bring presents, and come into his courts.

9O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

10Tell it out among the heathen, that the LORD is King, and that it is he who hath made the round world so fast that it cannot be moved; * and how that he shall judge the peoples righteously.

11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; * let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is.

12Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it; * then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the LORD.

13For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth; * and with righteousness to judge the world, and the peoples with his truth.

Psalm 97 Dominus regnavit.

THE LORD is King, the earth may be glad thereof; * yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof.

2Clouds and darkness are round about him: * righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his seat.

3There shall go a fire before him, * and burn up his enemies on every side.

4His lightnings gave shine unto the world: * the earth saw it, and was afraid.

5The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD; * at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6The heavens have declared his righteousness, * and all the peoples have seen his glory.

7Confounded be all they that worship carved images, and that delight in vain gods: * worship him, all ye gods.

8Sion heard of it, and rejoiced; and the daughters of Judah were glad, * because of thy judgments, O LORD.

9For thou, LORD, art higher than all that are in the earth: * thou art exalted far above all gods.

10O ye that love the LORD, see that ye hate the thing which is evil: * the Lord preserveth the souls of his saints; he shall deliver them from the hand of the ungodly.

11There is sprung up a light for the righteous, * and joyful gladness for such as are true-hearted.

12Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; * and give thanks for a remembrance of his holiness.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 98 Cantate Domino.

O sing unto the LORD a new song; * for he hath done marvellous things.

2With his own right hand, and with his holy arm, * hath he gotten himself the victory.

3The LORD declared his salvation; * his righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen.

4He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel; * and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God.

5Show yourselves joyful unto the LORD, all ye lands; * sing, rejoice, and give thanks.

6Praise the LORD upon the harp; * sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving.

7With trumpets also and shawms, * O show yourselves joyful before the LORD, the King.

8Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is; * the round world, and they that dwell therein.

9Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the LORD; * for he is come to judge the earth.

10With righteousness shall he judge the world, * and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 99 Dominus regnavit.

THE LORD is King, be the people never so impatient; * he sitteth between the Cherubim, be the earth never so unquiet.

2The LORD is great in Sion, * and high above all people.

3They shall give thanks unto thy Name, * which is great, wonderful, and holy.

4The King’s power loveth judgment; thou hast prepared equity, * thou hast executed judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

5O magnify the LORD our God, and fall down before his footstool; * for he is holy.

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: * these called upon the LORD, and he heard them.

7He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar; * for they kept his testimonies, and the law that he gave them.

8Thou heardest them, O LORD our God; * thou forgavest them, O God, though thou didst punish their wicked doings.

9O magnify the LORD our God, and worship him upon his holy hill; * for the LORD our God is holy.

Psalm 100 Jubilate Deo.

O be joyful in the LORD, all ye lands: * serve the LORD with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.

2Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; * we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

3O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.

4For the LORD is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Psalm 101 Misericordiam et judicium.

MY song shall be of mercy and judgment; * unto thee, O LORD, will I sing.

2O let me have understanding * in the way of godliness!

3When wilt thou come unto me? * I will walk in my house with a perfect heart.

4I will take no wicked thing in hand; I hate the sins of unfaithfulness; * there shall no such cleave unto me.

5A froward heart shall depart from me; * I will not know a wicked person.

6Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, * him will I destroy.

7Whoso hath also a haughty look and a proud heart, * I will not suffer him.

8Mine eyes look upon such as are faithful in the land, * that they may dwell with me.

9Whoso leadeth a godly life, * he shall be my servant.

10There shall no deceitful person dwell in my house; * he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

11I shall soon destroy all the ungodly that are in the land; * that I may root out all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.
