The Twenty-first Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 105 Confitemini Domino.

GIVE thanks unto the LORD, and call upon his Name; * tell the people what things he hath done.

2O let your songs be of him, and praise him; * and let your talking be of all his wondrous works.

3Rejoice in his holy Name; * let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

4Seek the LORD and his strength; * seek his face evermore.

5Remember the marvellous works that he hath done; * his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

6O ye seed of Abraham his servant, * ye children of Jacob his chosen.

7He is the LORD our God; * his judgments are in all the world.

8He hath been alway mindful of his covenant and promise, * that he made to a thousand generations;

9Even the covenant that he made with Abraham; * and the oath that he sware unto Isaac;

10And appointed the same unto Jacob for a law, * and to Israel for an everlasting testament;

11Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, * the lot of your inheritance:

12When there were yet but a few of them, * and they strangers in the land;

13What time as they went from one nation to another, * from one kingdom to another people;

14He suffered no man to do them wrong, * but reproved even kings for their sakes;

15Touch not mine anointed, * and do my prophets no harm.

16Moreover, he called for a dearth upon the land, * and destroyed all the provision of bread.

17But he had sent a man before them, * even Joseph, who was sold to be a bond-servant;

18Whose feet they hurt in the stocks; * the iron entered into his soul;

19Until the time came that his cause was known: * the word of the LORD tried him.

20The king sent, and delivered him; * the prince of the people let him go free.

21He made him lord also of his house, * and ruler of all his substance;

22That he might inform his princes after his will, * and teach his senators wisdom.

23Israel also came into Egypt, * and Jacob was a stranger in the land of Ham.

24And he increased his people exceedingly, * and made them stronger than their enemies;

25Whose heart turned so, that they hated his people, * and dealt untruly with his servants.

26Then sent he Moses his servant, * and Aaron whom he had chosen.

27And these showed his tokens among them, * and wonders in the land of Ham.

28He sent darkness, and it was dark; * and they were not obedient unto his word.

29He turned their waters into blood, * and slew their fish.

30Their land brought forth frogs; * yea, even in their kings' chambers.

31He spake the word, and there came all manner of flies, * and lice in all their quarters.

32He gave them hailstones for rain; * and flames of fire in their land.

33He smote their vines also and fig-trees; * and destroyed the trees that were in their coasts.

34He spake the word, and the grasshoppers came, and caterpillars innumerable, * and did eat up all the grass in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.

35He smote all the firstborn in their land; * even the chief of all their strength.

36He brought them forth also with silver and gold; * there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

37Egypt was glad at their departing; * for they were afraid of them.

38He spread out a cloud to be a covering, * and fire to give light in the night season.

39At their desire he brought quails; * and he filled them with the bread of heaven.

40He opened the rock of stone, and the waters flowed out, * so that rivers ran in the dry places.

41For why? he remembered his holy promise; * and Abraham his servant.

42And he brought forth his people with joy, * and his chosen with gladness;

43And gave them the lands of the heathen; * and they took the labours of the people in possession;

44That they might keep his statutes, * and observe his laws.

LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE Lord + bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, this night and evermore. Amen.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 106 Confitemini Domino.

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is gracious, * and his mercy endureth for ever.

2Who can express the noble acts of the LORD, * or show forth all his praise?

3Blessed are they that alway keep judgment, * and do righteousness.

4Remember me, O LORD, according to the favour that thou bearest unto thy people; * O visit me with thy salvation;

5That I may see the felicity of thy chosen, * and rejoice in the gladness of thy people, and give thanks with thine inheritance.

6We have sinned with our fathers; * we have done amiss, and dealt wickedly.

7Our fathers regarded not thy wonders in Egypt, neither kept they thy great goodness in remembrance; * but were disobedient at the sea, even at the Red Sea.

8Nevertheless, he helped them for his Name's sake, * that he might make his power to be known.

9He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up; * so he led them through the deep, as through a wilderness.

10And he saved them from the adversary's hand, * and delivered them from the hand of the enemy.

11As for those that troubled them, the waters overwhelmed them; * there was not one of them left.

12Then believed they his words, * and sang praise unto him.

13But within a while they forgat his works, * and would not abide his counsel.

14But lust came upon them in the wilderness, * and they tempted God in the desert.

15And he gave them their desire, * and sent leanness withal into their soul.

16They angered Moses also in the tents, * and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

17So the earth opened, and swallowed up Dathan, * and covered the congregation of Abiram.

18And the fire was kindled in their company; * the flame burnt up the ungodly.

19They made a calf in Horeb, * and worshipped the molten image.

20Thus they turned their glory * into the similitude of a calf that eateth hay.

21And they forgat God their Saviour, * who had done so great things in Egypt;

22Wondrous works in the land of Ham; * and fearful things by the Red Sea.

23So he said he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the gap, * to turn away his wrathful indignation, lest he should destroy them.

24Yea, they thought scorn of that pleasant land, * and gave no credence unto his word;

25But murmured in their tents, * and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.

26Then lift he up his hand against them, * to overthrow them in the wilderness;

27To cast out their seed among the nations, * and to scatter them in the lands.

28They joined themselves unto Baal-peor, * and ate the offerings of the dead.

29Thus they provoked him to anger with their own inventions; * and the plague was great among them.

30Then stood up Phinehas, and interposed; * and so the plague ceased.

31And that was counted unto him for righteousness, * among all posterities for evermore.

32They angered him also at the waters of strife, * so that he punished Moses for their sakes;

33Because they provoked his spirit, * so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

34Neither destroyed they the heathen, * as the LORD commanded them;

35But were mingled among the heathen, * and learned their works.

36Insomuch that they worshipped their idols, which became a snare unto them; * yea, they offered their sons and their daughters unto devils;

37And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, * whom they offered unto the idols of Canaan; and the land was defiled with blood.

38Thus were they stained with their own works, * and went a whoring with their own inventions.

39Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, * insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

40And he gave them over into the hand of the heathen; * and they that hated them were lords over them.

41Their enemies oppressed them, * and had them in subjection.

42Many a time did he deliver them; * but they rebelled against him with their own inventions, and were brought down in their wickedness.

43Nevertheless, when he saw their adversity, * he heard their complaint.

44He thought upon his covenant, and pitied them, according unto the multitude of his mercies; * yea, he made all those that led them away captive to pity them.

45Deliver us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen; * that we may give thanks unto thy holy Name, and make our boast of thy praise.

46Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, from everlasting, and world without end; * And let all the people say, Amen.
