The Twenty-second Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 107 Confitemini Domino.

O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is gracious, * and his mercy endureth for ever.

2Let them give thanks whom the LORD hath redeemed, * and delivered from the hand of the enemy;

3And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west; * from the north, and from the south.

4They went astray in the wilderness out of the way, * and found no city to dwell in.

5Hungry and thirsty, * their soul fainted in them.

6So they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, * and he delivered them from their distress.

7He led them forth by the right way, * that they might go to the city where they dwelt.

8O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; * and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

9For he satisfieth the empty soul, * and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

10Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * being fast bound in misery and iron;

11Because they rebelled against the words of the Lord, * and lightly regarded the counsel of the Most Highest;

12He also brought down their heart through heaviness: * they fell down, and there was none to help them.

13So when they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, * he delivered them out of their distress.

14For he brought them out of darkness, and out of the shadow of death, * and brake their bonds in sunder.

15O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; * and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

16For he hath broken the gates of brass, * and smitten the bars of iron in sunder.

17Foolish men are plagued for their offence, * and because of their wickedness.

18Their soul abhorred all manner of meat, * and they were even hard at death's door.

19So when they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, * he delivered them out of their distress.

20He sent his word, and healed them; * and they were saved from their destruction.

21O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; * and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

22That they would offer unto him the sacrifice of thanksgiving, * and tell out his works with gladness!

23They that go down to the sea in ships, * and occupy their business in great waters;

24These men see the works of the LORD, * and his wonders in the deep.

25For at his word the stormy wind ariseth, * which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26They are carried up to the heaven, and down again to the deep; * their soul melteth away because of the trouble.

27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, * and are at their wit's end.

28So when they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, * he delivereth them out of their distress.

29For he maketh the storm to cease, * so that the waves thereof are still.

30Then are they glad, because they are at rest; * and so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be.

31O that men would therefore praise the LORD for his goodness; * and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men!

32That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people, * and praise him in the seat of the elders!

33He turneth the floods into a wilderness, * and drieth up the water-springs.

34A fruitful land maketh he barren, * for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

35Again, he maketh the wilderness a standing water, * and water-springs of a dry ground.

36And there he setteth the hungry, * that they may build them a city to dwell in;

37That they may sow their land, and plant vineyards, * to yield them fruits of increase.

38He blesseth them, so that they multiply exceedingly; * and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

39And again, when they are minished and brought low * through oppression, through any plague or trouble;

40Though he suffer them to be evil entreated through tyrants, * and let them wander out of the way in the wilderness;

41Yet helpeth he the poor out of misery, * and maketh him households like a flock of sheep.

42The righteous will consider this, and rejoice; * and the mouth of all wickedness shall be stopped.

43Whoso is wise, will ponder these things; * and they shall understand the loving-kindness of the LORD.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE Lord + bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, this night and evermore. Amen.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 108 Paratum cor meum.

O God, my heart is ready, my heart is ready; * I will sing, and give praise with the best member that I have.

2Awake, thou lute and harp; * I myself will awake right early.

3I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the peoples; * I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

4For thy mercy is greater than the heavens, * and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

5Set up thyself, O God, above the heavens, * and thy glory above all the earth;

6That thy beloved may be delivered: * let thy right hand save them, and hear thou me.

7God hath spoken in his holiness; * I will rejoice therefore, and divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

8Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; * Ephraim also is the strength of my head; Judah is my lawgiver;

9Moab is my wash-pot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe; * upon Philistia will I triumph.

10Who will lead me into the strong city? * and who will bring me into Edom?

11Hast not thou forsaken us, O God? * and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?

12O help us against the enemy: * for vain is the help of man.

13Through God we shall do great acts; * and it is he that shall tread down our enemies.

Psalm 109 Deus, laudem.

HOLD not thy tongue, O God of my praise; * for the mouth of the ungodly, yea, the mouth of the deceitful is opened upon me.

2And they have spoken against me with false tongues; * they compassed me about also with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.

3For the love that I had unto them, lo, they take now my contrary part; * but I give myself unto prayer.

4Thus have they rewarded me evil for good, * and hatred for my good will.

5Set thou an ungodly man to be ruler over him, * and let an adversary stand at his right hand.

6When sentence is given upon him, let him be condemned; * and let his prayer be turned into sin.

7Let his days be few; * and let another take his office.

8Let his children be fatherless, * and his wife a widow.

9Let his children be vagabonds, and beg their bread; * let them seek it also out of desolate places.

10Let the extortioner consume all that he hath; * and let the stranger spoil his labour.

11Let there be no man to pity him, * nor to have compassion upon his fatherless children.

12Let his posterity be destroyed; * and in the next generation let his name be clean put out.

13Let the wickedness of his fathers be had in remembrance in the sight of the LORD; * and let not the sin of his mother be done away.

14Let them alway be before the LORD, * that he may root out the memorial of them from off the earth;

15And that, because his mind was not to do good; * but persecuted the poor helpless man, that he might slay him that was vexed at the heart.

16His delight was in cursing, and it shall happen unto him; * he loved not blessing, therefore shall it be far from him.

17He clothed himself with cursing like as with a raiment, * and it shall come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.

18Let it be unto him as the cloak that he hath upon him, * and as the girdle that he is alway girded withal.

19Let it thus happen from the LORD unto mine enemies, * and to those that speak evil against my soul.

20But deal thou with me, O LORD God, according unto thy Name; * for sweet is thy mercy.

21O deliver me, for I am helpless and poor, * and my heart is wounded within me.

22I go hence like the shadow that departeth, * and am driven away as the grasshopper.

23My knees are weak through fasting; * my flesh is dried up for want of fatness.

24I am become also a reproach unto them: * they that look upon me shake their heads.

25Help me, O LORD my God; * O save me according to thy mercy;

26And they shall know how that this is thy hand, * and that thou, LORD, hast done it.

27Though they curse, yet bless thou; * and let them be confounded that rise up against me; but let thy servant rejoice.

28Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame; * and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a cloak.

29As for me, I will give great thanks unto the LORD with my mouth, * and praise him among the multitude;

30For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, * to save his soul from unrighteous judges.
