The Twenty-eighth Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 132 Memento, Domine

LORD, remember David, * and all his trouble:

2How he sware unto the LORD, * and vowed a vow unto the Almighty God of Jacob:

3I will not come within the tabernacle of mine house, * nor climb up into my bed;

4I will not suffer mine eyes to sleep, nor mine eyelids to slumber; * neither the temples of my head to take any rest;

5Until I find out a place for the temple of the LORD; * an habitation for the Mighty God of Jacob.

6Lo, we heard of the same at Ephratah, * and found it in the wood.

7We will go into his tabernacle, * and fall low on our knees before his footstool.

8Arise, O LORD, into thy resting-place; * thou, and the ark of thy strength.

9Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; * and let thy saints sing with joyfulness.

10For thy servant David's sake, * turn not away the face of thine anointed.

11The LORD hath made a faithful oath unto David, * and he shall not shrink from it:

12Of the fruit of thy body * shall I set upon thy throne.

13If thy children will keep my covenant, and my testimonies that I shall teach them; * their children also shall sit upon thy throne for evermore.

14For the LORD hath chosen Sion to be an habitation for himself; * he hath longed for her.

15This shall be my rest for ever: * here will I dwell, for I have a delight therein.

16I will bless her victuals with increase, * and will satisfy her poor with bread.

17I will deck her priests with health, * and her saints shall rejoice and sing.

18There shall I make the horn of David to flourish: * I have ordained a lantern for mine anointed.

19As for his enemies, I shall clothe them with shame; * but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

Psalm 133 Ecce, quam bonum!

BEHOLD, how good and joyful a thing it is, * for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2It is like the precious oil upon the head, that ran down unto the beard, * even unto Aaron's beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing.

3Like as the dew of Hermon, * which fell upon the hill of Sion.

4For there the LORD promised his blessing, * and life for evermore.

Psalm 134 Ecce nunc.

BEHOLD now, praise the LORD, * all ye servants of the LORD;

2Ye that by night stand in the house of the LORD, * even in the courts of the house of our God.

3Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, * and praise the LORD.

4The LORD that made heaven and earth * give thee blessing out of Sion.

Psalm 135 Laudate Nomen.

O praise the LORD, laud ye the Name of the LORD; * praise it, O ye servants of the LORD;

2Ye that stand in the house of the LORD, * in the courts of the house of our God.

3O praise the LORD, for the LORD is gracious; * O sing praises unto his Name, for it is lovely.

4For why? the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, * and Israel for his own possession.

5For I know that the LORD is great, * and that our Lord is above all gods.

6Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth; * and in the sea, and in all deep places.

7He bringeth forth the clouds from the ends of the world, * and sendeth forth lightnings with the rain, bringing the winds out of his treasuries.

8He smote the firstborn of Egypt, * both of man and beast.

9He hath sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O thou land of Egypt; * upon Pharaoh, and all his servants.

10He smote divers nations, * and slew mighty kings:

11Sihon, king of the Amorites; and Og, the king of Bashan; * and all the kingdoms of Canaan;

12And gave their land to be an heritage, * even an heritage unto Israel his people.

13Thy Name, O LORD, endureth for ever; * so doth thy memorial, O LORD, from one generation to another.

14For the LORD will avenge his people, * and be gracious unto his servants.

15As for the images of the heathen, they are but silver and gold; * the work of men's hands.

16They have mouths, and speak not; * eyes have they, but they see not.

17They have ears, and yet they hear not; * neither is there any breath in their mouths.

18They that make them are like unto them; * and so are all they that put their trust in them.

19Praise the LORD, ye house of Israel; * praise the LORD, ye house of Aaron.

20Praise the LORD, ye house of Levi; * ye that fear the LORD, praise the LORD.

21Praised be the LORD out of Sion, * who dwelleth at Jerusalem.

THE Lord + bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, this night and evermore. Amen.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

10Who smote Egypt, with their firstborn: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

20And Og, the king of Bashan: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

21And gave away their land for an heritage: * for his mercy endureth for ever;

26O give thanks unto the God of heaven: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

27O give thanks unto the Lord of lords: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Psalm 137 Super flumina.

BY the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept, * when we remembered thee, O Sion.

2As for our harps, we hanged them up * upon the trees that are therein.

3For they that led us away captive, required of us then a song, and melody in our heaviness: * Sing us one of the songs of Sion.

4How shall we sing the LORD’S song * in a strange land?

5If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, * let my right hand forget her cunning.

6If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; * yea, if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

7Remember the children of Edom, O LORD, in the day of Jerusalem; * how they said, Down with it, down with it, even to the ground.

8O daughter of Babylon, wasted with misery; * yea, happy shall he be that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us.

9Blessed shall he be that taketh thy children, * and throweth them against the stones.

Psalm 138 Confitebor tibi.

I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; * even before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.

2I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy Name, because of thy loving-kindness and truth; * for thou hast magnified thy Name, and thy word, above all things.

3When I called upon thee, thou heardest me; * and enduedst my soul with much strength.

4All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD; * for they have heard the words of thy mouth.

5Yea, they shall sing of the ways of the LORD, * that great is the glory of the LORD.

6For though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; * as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off.

7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me; * thou shalt stretch forth thy hand upon the furiousness of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.

8The LORD shall make good his loving-kindness toward me; * yea, thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever; despise not then the works of thine own hands.
