The Eighteenth Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 90 Domine, refugium.

LORD, thou hast been our refuge, * from one generation to another.

2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever the earth and the world were made, * thou art God from everlasting, and world without end.

3Thou turnest man to destruction; * again thou sayest, Come again, ye children of men.

4For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, * and as a watch in the night.

5As soon as thou scatterest them they are even as a sleep; * and fade away suddenly like the grass.

6In the morning it is green, and groweth up; * but in the evening it is cut down, dried up, and withered.

7For we consume away in thy displeasure, * and are afraid at thy wrathful indignation.

8Thou hast set our misdeeds before thee; * and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

9For when thou art angry all our days are gone: * we bring our years to an end, as it were a tale that is told.

10The days of our age are threescore years and ten; and though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years, * yet is their strength then but labour and sorrow; so soon passeth it away, and we are gone.

11But who regardeth the power of thy wrath? * or feareth aright thy indignation?

12So teach us to number our days, * that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

13Turn thee again, O LORD, at the last, * and be gracious unto thy servants.

14O satisfy us with thy mercy, and that soon: * so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life.

15Comfort us again now after the time that thou hast plagued us; * and for the years wherein we have suffered adversity.

16Show thy servants thy work, * and their children thy glory.

17And the glorious majesty of the LORD our God be upon us: * prosper thou the work of our hands upon us; O prosper thou our handy-work.

Psalm 91 Qui habitat.

WHOSO dwelleth under the defence of the Most High, * shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2I will say unto the LORD, Thou art my hope, and my stronghold; * my God, in him will I trust.

3For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, * and from the noisome pestilence.

4He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; * his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, * nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, * nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.

7A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; * but it shall not come nigh thee.

8Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold, * and see the reward of the ungodly.

9For thou, LORD, art my hope; * thou hast set thine house of defence very high.

10There shall no evil happen unto thee, * neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, * to keep thee in all thy ways.

12They shall bear thee in their hands, * that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.

13Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder: * the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet.

14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; * I will set him up, because he hath known my Name.

15He shall call upon me, and I will hear him; * yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honour.

16With long life will I satisfy him, * and show him my salvation.

Psalm 92 Bonum est confiteri.

IT is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, * and to sing praises unto thy Name, O Most Highest;

2To tell of thy loving-kindness early in the morning, * and of thy truth in the night season;

3Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the lute; * upon a loud instrument, and upon the harp.

4For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy works; * and I will rejoice in giving praise for the operations of thy hands.

5O LORD, how glorious are thy works! * thy thoughts are very deep.

6An unwise man doth not well consider this, * and a fool doth not understand it.

7When the ungodly are green as the grass, and when all the workers of wickedness do flourish, * then shall they be destroyed for ever; but thou, LORD, art the Most Highest for evermore.

8For lo, thine enemies, O LORD, lo, thine enemies shall perish; * and all the workers of wickedness shall be destroyed.

9But my horn shall be exalted like the horn of an unicorn; * for I am anointed with fresh oil.

10Mine eye also shall see his lust of mine enemies, * and mine ear shall hear his desire of the wicked that arise up against me.

11The righteous shall flourish like a palm-tree, * and shall spread abroad like a cedar in Lebanon.

12Such as are planted in the house of the LORD, * shall flourish in the courts of the house of our God.

13They also shall bring forth more fruit in their age, * and shall be fat and well-liking;

14That they may show how true the LORD my strength is, * and that there is no unrighteousness in him.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 93 Dominus regnavit.

THE LORD is King, and hath put on glorious apparel; * the LORD hath put on his apparel, and girded himself with strength.

2He hath made the round world so sure, * that it cannot be moved.

3Ever since the world began, hath thy seat been prepared: * thou art from everlasting.

4The floods are risen, O LORD, the floods have lift up their voice; * the floods lift up their waves.

5The waves of the sea are mighty, and rage horribly; * but yet the LORD, who dwelleth on high, is mightier.

6Thy testimonies, O LORD, are very sure: * holiness becometh thine house for ever.

Psalm 94 Deus ultionum.

O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth, * thou God, to whom vengeance belongeth, show thyself.

2Arise, thou Judge of the world, * and reward the proud after their deserving.

3LORD, how long shall the ungodly, * how long shall the ungodly triumph?

4How long shall all wicked doers speak so disdainfully, * and make such proud boasting?

5They smite down thy people, O LORD, * and trouble thine heritage.

6They murder the widow and the stranger, * and put the fatherless to death.

7And yet they say, Tush, the LORD shall not see, * neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

8Take heed, ye unwise among the people: * O ye fools, when will ye understand?

9He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? * or he that made the eye, shall he not see?

10Or he that instructeth the heathen, * it is he that teacheth man knowledge; shall not he punish?

11The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, * that they are but vain.

12Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, * and teachest him in thy law;

13That thou mayest give him patience in time of adversity, * until the pit be digged up for the ungodly.

14For the LORD will not fail his people; * neither will he forsake his inheritance;

15Until righteousness turn again unto judgment: * all such as are true in heart shall follow it.

16Who will rise up with me against the wicked? * or who will take my part against the evil doers?

17If the LORD had not helped me, * it had not failed, but my soul had been put to silence.

18But when I said, My foot hath slipt; * thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

19In the multitude of the sorrows that I had in my heart, * thy comforts have refreshed my soul.

20Wilt thou have any thing to do with the throne of wickedness, * which imagineth mischief as a law?

21They gather them together against the soul of the righteous, * and condemn the innocent blood.

22But the LORD is my refuge, * and my God is the strength of my confidence.

23He shall recompense them their wickedness, and destroy them in their own malice; * yea, the LORD our God shall destroy them.
