The Second Day

Morning

A Shorter Form for Morning Prayer

After the reading of a brief portion of Holy Scripture, let the Head of the House-hold, or some other member of the family, lead those present, all kneeling, in saying the Lord's Prayer.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here may be added any special Prayers.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Prayer

The Master or Mistress having called together as many of the Family as can conveniently be present, let one of them, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Amen.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

Acknowledgement of God's Mercy and Preservation, especially through the Night past.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being; We, thy needy creatures, render thee our humble praises, for thy preservation of us from the beginning of our lives to this day, and especially for having delivered us from the dangers of the past night. For these thy mercies, we bless and magnify thy glorious Name; humbly beseeching thee to accept this our morning sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for his sake who lay down in the grave, and rose again for us, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dedication of Soul and Body to God's Service, with a Resolution to be growing daily in Goodness.

AND since it is of thy mercy, O gracious Father, that another day is added to our lives; We here dedicate both our souls and bodies to thee and thy service, in a sober, righteous, and godly life: in which resolution, do thou, O merciful God, confirm and strengthen us; that, as we grow in age, we may grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to enable us to perform that Resolution.

BUT, O God, who knowest the weakness and corruption of our nature, and the manifold temptations which we daily meet with; We humbly beseech thee to have compassion on our infirmities, and to give us the constant assistance of thy Holy Spirit; that we may be effectually restrained from sin, and incited to our duty. Imprint upon our hearts such a dread of thy judgements, and such a grateful sense of thy goodness to us, as may make us both afraid and ashamed to offend thee. And, above all, keep in our minds a lively remembrance of that great day, in which we must give a strict account of our thoughts, words, and actions to him whom thou hast appointed the Judge of quick and dead, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Grace to guide and keep us the following Day, and for God's Blessing on the business of the Same.

IN particular, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our serveral callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; and ready to do good to all men, according to our abilities and opportunities. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things, and whatever else thou shalt see to be neccessary and convenient to us, we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Morning Psalms

Psalm 9 Confitebor tibi.

I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; * I will speak of all thy marvellous works.

2I will be glad and rejoice in thee; * yea, my songs will I make of thy Name, O thou Most Highest.

3While mine enemies are driven back, * they shall fall and perish at thy presence.

4For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; * thou art set in the throne that judgest right.

5Thou hast rebuked the heathen, and destroyed the ungodly; * thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

6O thou enemy, thy destructions are come to a perpetual end; * even as the cities which thou hast destroyed, whose memorial is perished with them.

7But the LORD shall endure for ever; * he hath also prepared his seat for judgment.

8For he shall judge the world in righteousness, * and minister true judgment unto the people.

9The LORD also will be a defence for the oppressed, * even a refuge in due time of trouble.

10And they that know thy Name will put their trust in thee; * for thou, LORD, hast never failed them that seek thee.

11O praise the LORD which dwelleth in Sion; * show the people of his doings.

12For when he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them, * and forgetteth not the complaint of the poor.

13Have mercy upon me, O LORD; consider the trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, * thou that liftest me up from the gates of death;

14That I may show all thy praises within the gates of the daughter of Sion: * I will rejoice in thy salvation.

15The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made; * in the same net which they hid privily is their foot taken.

16The LORD is known to execute judgment; * the ungodly is trapped in the work of his own hands.

17The wicked shall be turned to destruction, * and all the people that forget God.

18For the poor shall not alway be forgotten; * the patient abiding of the meek shall not perish for ever.

19Up, LORD, and let not man have the upper hand; * let the heathen be judged in thy sight.

20Put them in fear, O LORD, * that the heathen may know themselves to be but men.

Psalm 10 Ut quid, Domine?

WHY standest thou so far off, O LORD, * and hidest thy face in the needful time of trouble?

2The ungodly, for his own lust, doth persecute the poor: * let them be taken in the crafty wiliness that they have imagined.

3For the ungodly hath made boast of his own heart's desire, * and speaketh good of the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.

4The ungodly is so proud, that he careth not for God, * neither is God in all his thoughts.

5His ways are alway grievous; * thy judgments are far above out of his sight, and therefore defieth he all his enemies.

6For he hath said in his heart, Tush, I shall never be cast down, * there shall no harm happen unto me.

7His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and fraud; * under his tongue is ungodliness and vanity.

8He sitteth lurking in the thievish corners of the streets, * and privily in his lurking dens doth he murder the innocent; his eyes are set against the poor.

9For he lieth waiting secretly; even as a lion lurketh he in his den, * that he may ravish the poor.

10He doth ravish the poor, * when he getteth him into his net.

11He falleth down, and humbleth himself, * that the congregation of the poor may fall into the hands of his captains.

12He hath said in his heart, Tush, God hath forgotten; * he hideth away his face, and he will never see it.

13Arise, O LORD God, and lift up thine hand; * forget not the poor.

14Wherefore should the wicked blaspheme God, * while he doth say in his heart, Tush, thou God carest not for it?

15Surely thou hast seen it; * for thou beholdest ungodliness and wrong, that thou mayest take the matter into thy hand.

16The poor committeth himself unto thee; * for thou art the helper of the friendless.

17Break thou the power of the ungodly and malicious; * search out his ungodliness, until thou find none.

18The LORD is King for ever and ever, * and the heathen are perished out of the land.

19LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the poor; * thou preparest their heart, and thine ear hearkeneth;

20To help the fatherless and poor unto their right, * that the man of the earth be no more exalted against them.

Psalm 11 In Domino confido.

IN the LORD put I my trust; * how say ye then to my soul, that she should flee as a bird unto the hill?

2For lo, the ungodly bend their bow, and make ready their arrows within the quiver, * that they may privily shoot at them which are true of heart.

3If the foundations be destroyed, * what can the righteous do?

4The LORD is in his holy temple; * the LORD'S seat is in heaven.

5His eyes consider the poor, * and his eyelids try the children of men.

6The LORD approveth the righteous: * but the ungodly, and him that delighteth in wickedness, doth his soul abhor.

7Upon the ungodly he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, storm and tempest: * this shall be their portion to drink.

8For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; * his countenance will behold the thing that is just.

Evening Prayer

The Family being together, a little before bed-time, let the Master our Mistress, or any other who may be appointed, say as followeth, all kneeling, and repeating with him the Lord's Prayer.

Here may follow the Collect for the day.

* Here let him who reads make a short pause, that every one may secretly confess the sins and failings of that day.

Confession of Sins, with a Prayer for Contrition and Pardon.

MOST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins; We come before thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of they righteous laws.* But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them; and work in us an hearty contrition; that we may obtain forgiveness at thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners; for the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer for Grace to reform and grow Better.

AND lest, through our own fraility, or the temptations which encompass us, we be drawn again into sin, vouchsafe us, we beseech thee, the direction and assistance of thy Holy Spirit. Reform whatever is amiss in the temper and disposition of our souls; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may rest there. Purge our hearts from envy, hatred, and malice; that we may never suffer the sun to go down upon our wrath; but may always go to our rest in peace, charity, and good-will, with a conscience void of offence towards thee, and towards men; that so we may be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Intercession.

AND accept, O Lord, our intercessions for all mankind. Let the light of thy Gospel shine upon all nations; and may as many as have received it, live as becomes it. Be gracious unto thy Church; and grant that every member of the same, in his vocation and ministry, may serve thee faithfully. Bless all in authority over us; and so rule their hearts and strengthen their hands, that they may punish wickedness and vice, and maintain thy true religion and virtue. Send down thy blessings, temporal and spiritual, upon all our relations, friends, and neighbours. Reward all who have done us good, and pardon all those who have done or wish us evil, and give them repentance and better minds. Be merciful to all who are in any trouble; and do thou, the God of pity, administer to them according to their several necessities; for his sake who went about doing good, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Thanksgiving.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks, for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer for God's Protection through the Night following.

IN particular, we beseech thee to continue thy gracious protection to us this night. Defend us from all dangers and mischiefs, and from the fear of them; that we may enjoy such refreshing sleep as may fit us for the duties of the coming day. And grant us grace always to live in such a state that we may never be afraid to die; so that, living and dying, we may be thine, through the merits and satisfaction of thy Son Christ Jesus, in whose Name we offer up these our imperfect prayers. Amen.

THE Grace + of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.

On Sundays, and on other days when it may be convenient, it will be proper to begin with a Chapter, or part of a Chapter, from the New Testament.

Evening Psalms

Psalm 12 Salvum me fac.

HELP me, LORD, for there is not one godly man left; * for the faithful are minished from among the children of men.

2They talk of vanity every one with his neighbour; * they do but flatter with their lips, and dissemble in their double heart.

3The LORD shall root out all deceitful lips, * and the tongue that speaketh proud things;

4Which have said, With our tongue will we prevail; * we are they that ought to speak; who is lord over us?

5Now, for the comfortless troubles' sake of the needy, * and because of the deep sighing of the poor,

6I will up, saith the LORD; * and will help every one from him that swelleth against him, and will set him at rest.

7The words of the LORD are pure words; * even as the silver which from the earth is tried, and purified seven times in the fire.

8Thou shalt keep them, O LORD; * thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

9The ungodly walk on every side: * when they are exalted, the children of men are put to rebuke.

Psalm 14 Dixit insipiens.

THE fool hath said in his heart, * There is no God.

2They are corrupt, and become abominable in their doings; * there is none that doeth good, no not one.

3The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, * to see if there were any that would understand, and seek after God.

4But they are all gone out of the way, they are altogether become abominable; * there is none that doeth good, no not one.

5Have they no knowledge, that they are all such workers of mischief, * eating up my people as it were bread, and call not upon the LORD?

6There were they brought in great fear, even where no fear was; * for God is in the generation of the righteous.

7As for you, ye have made a mock at the counsel of the poor; * because he putteth his trust in the LORD.

8Who shall give salvation unto Israel out of Sion? * When the LORD turneth the captivity of his people, then shall Jacob rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
